A comprehensive evaluation of this film's development will be featured on my forthcoming website. Reading Lauren is not a conventional film, as its creation has evolved over time. This short debut defines me as an emerging filmmaker, pursuing my aspirations while residing in Dundee. The production commenced in 2017, following an investment in a Canon 80D, which allowed me to document small ideas heavily influenced by the films I consumed that year. These influences were rooted in post-modern and empathy genres, such as Mulholland Drive (David Lynch), Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki), Raw (Julia Ducournau), Always Shine (Sophia Takal), and one of my favorites, Victoria (Sebastian Schipper).
The reason for this debut being a long-term project may seem evident—it was my first film, with an abstract direction that was challenging for both the audience and myself. At times, envisioning a final product ready for release was difficult. To appreciate its revival, one must respect the qualities that have enabled its perseverance.
The film's audio was initially unusable, rendering the original cut a silent film. My inexperience in the complete filmmaking process led to challenges with sound, structure, and direction. Nevertheless, the film's visual appeal remained a significant driving force for its eventual publication. Feedback has shown that this short film demonstrates how a budgeted DSLR can achieve a vision typically associated with a cinema camera.
I have mixed feelings about the final cut, yet this does not diminish my appreciation for the project. It signifies a beginning, representing my style, methods, and passion for film. As the saying goes, true commitment involves perseverance.
It is important to note that every sound has been recreated by a sound designer, and actors and actresses have dubbed their scenes. I encourage viewers to understand the background of this film and to approach it with an open mind.
